In the lead up to the 2024 General Election, Fossil Free Parliament called on all parliamentary candidates to sign a pledge to:
- work to cut fossil fuel influence out of our politics;
- take a first step towards this by personally rejecting all offers of benefits from the fossil fuel industry and its representatives*, both during their election campaign and during their time as a sitting MP, should they be elected.
(*This is aligned with the ask of our No Fossil Funding pledge)
135 candidates signed the pledge, and 14 of those candidates are now MPs:
(Listed in no particular order)
Zarah Sultana, MP for Coventry South
Carla Denyer, MP for Bristol Central
Max Wilkinson, MP for Cheltenham
Cat Smith, MP for Lancaster and Lyre
Ellie Chowns, MP for North Herefordshire
Richard Burgon, MP for Leeds East
Adrian Ramsay, MP for Waveney Valley
Claire Hanna, MP for Belfast South and Mid Down
Dave Doogan, MP for Angus and Perthshire Glens
Vikki Slade, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole
Siân Berry, MP for Brighton Pavilion
Rachael Maskell, MP for York Central
Tom Morrison, MP for Cheadle
Claire Young, MP for Thornbury and Yate
We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took the time to email their candidates about the pledge. Thanks to you, there are now 14 advocates for a Fossil Free Parliament in Westminster!
We are looking forward to working with these MPs to restrict the fossil fuel industry’s access to and influence over our politics.
