Call on your MP to go fossil free!

We are calling on all MPs and Peers to sign the Fossil Free Parliament pledge, committing to cut fossil fuel interests out of our politics and to reject the industry’s donations.

We need a political system that boosts the wellbeing of our communities, sustains fair energy and food systems, and takes urgent action to mitigate the worst effects of the climate crisis. Fossil fuel interests in our politics are blocking all of this – it’s time we kicked them out.

Can you take a few minutes to ask your MP to sign the Fossil Free Parliament pledge? Write to them below.

Fossil fuel companies and their lobbyists have spent decades – and vast sums of money – denying climate science and derailing climate policy. This has enabled them to continue to make billions in profits from fossil fuel production while heating the planet. Allowing these companies to fund political parties, lobby government officials and even staff government departments means climate policy is captured by those that profit from its disruption and delay. As the climate crisis accelerates, it is more important now than ever to shut fossil fuel lobbyists out of Westminster.

Email writing tips

Thanks for taking the time to write to your MP!

To get a positive response from your MP, make your email personal to them and personal to you – their constituent. If you have the time, edit our supplied message by adding some points below:

  • Open the email by introducing yourself as a member of their constituency. Mention how long you have lived there, and any communities you are part of (sporting, faith groups, schooling).
  • Thank them for a recent time they showed positive leadership on climate or environment issues. You can check their voting and speaking record on climate using They Work For You
  • Connect their leadership to the Fossil Free Parliament Pledge. (e.g. “given the leadership you’ve shown/your positive track record in Parliament on climate issues, I thought you would be interested to sign…”)
  • Describe why it is important to you, as their constituent, that they sign this pledge.

Finally, above all else, it is important to keep your email polite and concise. MPs are very busy and often under a lot of strain, so they are therefore more likely to engage with emails that get the message across clearly, quickly and kindly..!

Thank you for taking action with us for a Parliament free from the influence of the fossil fuel industry!

What is the Fossil Free Parliament Pledge?

Read the full text of the Fossil Free Parliament Pledge here.

Note: the Fossil Free Parliament pledge is an updated version of the Fossil Free Parliament campaign’s first two pledges – the No Fossil Funding pledge and our General Election pledge. The General Election pledge was to the same effect as this pledge, so all signatories of that are considered to be signatories of this refreshed pledge, too.

Are you an MP, Peer or a member of their staff? Read and sign the pledge here.
